The practice

One practice, because it is one problem

Aching legs and worn-out backs, in Towaco, New Jersey. No aesthetics, no add-ons, no packages.

Why pain and veins are not two practices

It looks like an odd pairing until you notice how people actually arrive. Almost nobody walks in wanting a vein procedure. They walk in because their legs hurt — heavy by the afternoon, swollen by the evening, cramping at night, or sending pain down from the back.

That one complaint has two common causes. It can be venous, where failing valves let pressure build in the leg. It can be the spine or the joints, where a compressed nerve refers pain downward. They feel similar to the person having them and they are treated in opposite directions — so the expensive mistake is not choosing the wrong treatment, it is walking into a practice that only offers one of them.

A vein clinic finds veins. A spine practice finds degenerative changes that are near-universal and frequently explain nothing. Here the first job is telling the two apart, which is the territory of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation — the specialty Dr. D'Alessio is board-certified in, and the discipline of working out what a body has stopped being able to do and getting it doing it again without going to the operating room first.

Who this is mostly for

People whose work did this to them. Firefighters, police and corrections officers, teachers, nurses, the building trades, municipal and public-works crews — the jobs spent standing, carrying and on hard floors. Prolonged standing is the classic occupational cause of venous insufficiency, and the same shifts wear out backs, knees and shoulders.

Those plans also frequently carry out-of-network benefits that the people holding them have never used, which is worth knowing before you decide you cannot afford to be seen.

What we do not do

No aesthetic treatments. No packages. No membership. This is a medical practice and it does one job: working out why something hurts, and treating it.

We also do not perform surgery. Where an examination points to a problem that needs a surgeon, you will be told and referred, which is easier to do honestly when there is nothing here to sell you instead.

Tell us what’s going on

A consultation is a conversation and an examination, not a sales appointment. Dr. D’Alessio will tell you what she thinks is causing it, what can be done about it, and — when that is the honest answer — that you do not need a procedure.
