A Morris County neighbour
Riverdale occupies the north-east corner of Morris County, along the Pequannock and Pompton rivers, and our practice is in the same county at 624 Main Road, Suite 2B, Towaco. The drive is about seven miles, roughly 11 minutes without traffic: the Newark-Pompton Turnpike (County Route 511 Alternate) to Jacksonville Road, then on into Towaco.
Joints first — which structure hurts?
Joint pain is where Dr. Donna D’Alessio’s training shows most. She is board certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, the specialty concerned with how muscles, joints and nerves work together, and she does not treat an X-ray as the whole story: how badly a joint hurts and how bad it looks on film often disagree. The examination decides.
- Knees — arthritis, pain around the kneecap on stairs, an old meniscus or ligament injury, or pain that is really coming from the hip.
- Hips — groin pain points to the joint itself; pain on the outer point of the hip that hurts to lie on points to the tendons; buttock pain running down the leg usually begins in the lower back.
- Shoulders — a rotator cuff problem, a frozen shoulder or arthritis, told apart partly by how the arm moves when someone else lifts it.
What treatment can look like
A joint injection takes about 15 minutes and calms an inflamed joint; how you respond also shows whether that joint is the true source. It works best as a window in which strengthening can happen, and injections into the same joint are spaced out rather than repeated often.
PRP, prepared from your own blood, has its most encouraging evidence in mild to moderate knee arthritis and some tendon problems. It builds over weeks rather than days and is generally not covered by insurance, so you get the price first.
A strengthening plan runs underneath all of it, because the muscles around a joint decide how much load it takes with every step. If a joint is genuinely end-stage, you will hear that plainly rather than be offered injections that will not help.
Legs and veins as well
The same office maps leg veins by ultrasound and treats varicose veins in the office. If your knees and your veins both bother you, mention both when you book.
Riverdale patients ask
Can I come in after work? On Tuesdays the office stays open until 7 pm. Other weekdays it closes at 5 pm, or 4 pm on Fridays.
Do I need a referral? You can book without one. Some plans ask for a referral before they will pay, and checking your benefits tells us whether yours does.
Is exercise bad for an arthritic knee? For the most part, the opposite. The right type and amount of loading helps cartilage and builds the muscle that protects the joint, while avoiding activity leads to weakness that loads it more.

Tell us what’s going on
A consultation is a conversation and an examination, not a sales appointment. Dr. D’Alessio will tell you what she thinks is causing it, what can be done about it, and — when that is the honest answer — that you do not need a procedure.
